WEEK
4: THE TAYLOR AND FOURIER SERIES
This
week, we will be working with the Taylor and Fourier series. Below are some
questions we will address. Please post your answers in this area.
- What is a Taylor series? How is it related to a MacLaurin series?
- How do we build a Taylor series expansion for a given function, such as f(x) = e^x where a = 3?
- What is a Fourier series? Why is it a good series to use to approximate wave functions?
- How do we build a Fourier series? What are the formulas involved? What information do they give us?
- How does the even/odd nature of a function impact how we build the Fourier series? How can we tell if a function is even or odd?
- Please feel free to use examples from the homework to illustrate your answers.
MATH 270 Week 4 Lab
Instructions
Please
click on the link below to open up the lab. It will be in the form of a MS Word
document. Please complete all parts of the lab and note that there are places
where you must show the work that you did to reach the answer to a problem.
Online
Note: There are several ways that you can perform this action. If you have Word
2007 or a newer version, you can use the equation editor located under the
Insert tab. If you have a digital camera or a cell phone with a camera, you can
take a picture of your handwritten work, upload it to your computer, and from
there, submit it. You can scan your handwritten work into your computer and
submit it. Finally, only if none of the other methods work for you, you can
type directly from the keyboard using parentheses, carats, and other symbols to
delineate the pieces of your answers.
File
Naming: Please use the following format when you save your Word document. Save
your ONE Word file using the filename format “lastname_firstinitial_week4lab”.
For example, if you are Albert Einstein and you are submitting your Week 4 lab,
the filename should be “einstein_a_week4lab”. Don’t forget to submit your
assignment.
Deliverables
Submit
your lab once completed.

MATH 270 Week 4 HOMEWORK A
Go to
MyMathLab and complete the assignment located there. If you miss any questions,
remember that you can rework questions as many times as you’d like. Thus, your
goal should be 100% correct for this assignment. Remember to take advantage of
the “Show Me An Example” and “Help Me Solve This” links inside of MyMathLab.
These links are located immediately to the right of the homework questions.
MATH 270 Week 4 MIDTERM TEST
You
have one attempt at this test. If you would like a second attempt at the
Midterm Exam, you will need to do the following:
- Access your study plan and complete all problems with a pencil for the sections related to the test. You will need to submit the work for these problems to your instructor. Your instructor will then open a second attempt at the exam. There are several ways that you can perform this action. If you have Word 2007 or a newer version, you can use the equation editor located under the Insert tab. If you have a digital camera or a cell phone with a camera, you can take a picture of your handwritten work, upload it to your computer, and from there, send your work to your instructor. You can also scan your handwritten work into your computer. Finally, only if none of the other methods work for you, you can type directly from the keyboard by using parentheses, carats, and other symbols to delineate the pieces of your answers.
