PHYS 310 Week 5 Discussions
WEEK 5: MOMENTUM
Open
and run the ActivePhysics Tutorial 6.3, Momentum Conservation and Collisions.
Open and play the movie. Why are energy and momentum conservation needed to
explain what is observed?
WEEK 5: ENERGY
What’s the
difference between the term energy conservation as used in our textbook and as
used in the general media, such as newspapers or TV?
PHYS 310 Week 5
LAB A
Experiment
5a: Projectile Motion
Scenario/Summary
The
objective of this exercise is to use video and video analysis software to
measure the motion of objects. The first two videos will be of a falling ball
and falling balloon. You will use these videos to observe the effect of air
resistance of an object in free fall. The third video will allow you to
understand the experimental basis for describing projectile motion as the superposition
(or combination) of motion in the vertical direction and in the horizontal
direction.

LAB B
Experiment
5b: Newton’s Laws
Scenario/Summary
Newton’s
second law describes the behavior of everything that changes its motion due to
a net force—from the trajectory of a baseball to the motion of a planet. The
purpose of this experiment is to find out what happens to an object’s
acceleration when the net force applied to the object increases and the mass of
the system is constant.
You
will use a motion sensor to measure the motion of an object that is accelerated
by a net force and use Capstone to record the motion. You will then determine
what happens to the acceleration of the cart when the net force is increased
and the mass stays constant.
The
purpose of this laboratory is to understand how acceleration changes with
changing applied force.
