what you are doing as a volunteer.
DQ2 What do you hope to gain from your volunteer
experience? Be specific.

Week 2 Discussion
DQ1 What difficulties or challenges do you anticipate
as you prepare your journal entries throughout this course? For your first
response to this question, give your answer to this question. Then read the
responses of your fellow students and give them some feedback and suggestions
as to how they might solve or avoid the problems they are anticipating.
Hopefully someone will also have some suggestions for you!
DQ2 By this time, you have been to your site at least
once, maybe several times. From what you have seen so far, what theories,
research findings, concepts, or other knowledge in your field do you think will
be most applicable to you as a volunteer? Explain your reasons. As you look at
the responses of other volunteers, especially those in the same major as you,
what are your thoughts about what they wrote? That is, can you understand why
they wrote what they did? Can you suggest other theories, concepts, research
findings, etc., that they didn’t think of? If so, explain to them why you think
these other ideas might help their volunteer experience.

Week 3 Discussion
DQ1 Briefly describe how you used problem-solving
skills to resolve a problem you encountered during your volunteering
experience.(The problem may not have been one in the organization. It could be
one you encountered that had to do with your role or how you were going to
accomplish things as a volunteer.) After you have posted your contribution,
read the contributions of two or three other students and make constructive
suggestions as to alternate ways they might have dealt with the problem they
presented. Be as specific as you can – do not simply say something like, “you
should have handled it differently.”
DQ2 The IDEAL problem-solving process developed by
Bradford and Stein (1993) is implemented by: (I) Identifying the problem, (D)
Defining the problem, (E) Exploring strategies, (A) Acting on ideas, and (L)
Looking for effects. Think back to the problem you discussed in DQ1 or use a new
problem that you have experienced in your volunteer (internship) experience.
How can you use the IDEAL problem-solving process to help you solve the issue
you have encountered? Please give examples that engage each of the steps in the
IDEAL model.

Week 4 Discussion
DQ1 Apply the three phases of the decision-making
process to the following:
A personal-social objective.
An educational objective.
A career objective.
DQ2 Plan how you will take further steps to “know
yourself” and “know the world of work.” Discuss how you will merge these two
sets of information to make better career decisions.

Week 5 Discussion
DQ1 Meet with the human resources director or the
hiring person at your site. (If there is no one with that title, speak with
whoever does some of the interviews of prospective new employees.) Ask that
person at least five questions to find out his/her best and worst interview
experiences. Describe the five questions that you asked and the answers that
you received when you met with the human resources director or hiring person at
your site.
DQ2 What interview types did this person describe? For
example, consider the screening, the selection, the group, the competitive, the
panel, or the stress interview types.
